Friday March 9th
Arden Road Social Club : 8.30pm start - £6/£5 doggers HAIGHT ASHBURY +The Frontier Pyschiatrists + Hopper Propelled ElectricHaight Ashbury
It’s not often you can say a band is unique without seeming deluded or misguided, one listen to Psychedelic/Folk Glaswegians Haight-Ashbury and its easy to see they really are such a band. Whether its their haunting twin vocals, unusual live set up or their habit of writing a brilliant baroque pop song and then smashing it to pieces, creating a noise that can change from beautiful to surreal in an instant. Live, they play with no amplifiers but still manage to create a huge sound from just a few instruments, a sound that one music critic described as if the Velvet Underground were the Mama & The Papas backing band…ok, with a bit of Joni Mitchell, Jesus & Mary Chain, CSN&Y and Pentangle thrown in.
Brother and sister Scott(guitars, sitar) and Kirsty (bass/vocals) and best-friend since childhood, Jen (perc/vocals) formed the band in 2007. After only 2 gigs Haight-Ashbury (named after the 60s hippie mecca in San Francisco) were spotted by The Waterboys front man Mike Scott, and accompanied them on their 2007 UK tour . They have since then played festivals and venues all over the Scotland and England including triumphing over thousands of bands and winning the T.break competition as well as playing T in the Park, Belladrum, Solfest and Connect.
They were picked by the legendary Vaselines to join them on their 2010 comeback UK Tour during which Scott, Kirsty and Jen took it in turn each night to play the car horn on “Mollys Lips.”
